Dear Followers,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for following our little blog! I wanted to let you know that I'll be changing both the name & direction of the blog moving forward. I am refocusing it on MODEL HORSES - my own personal collection, collecting tips and trivia, just general neat stuff about all things model horses. So less about EquinArt, and more about all those wonderful models out there we love...Breyers, Hartlands, Stones, Lakeshores, customs, AR's, artists, you name it.

A Phone Call Says It All

This week I got a phone call from a woman asking about the Luminoso resin by Maggie Bennett. After we talked for a while about the model's details, she told me that she was actually calling for her 11-year old daughter. "That horse is all she talks about," this sweet lady said to me. "We are saving our pennies for it. I just wanted to be sure you'd have it and could ship it to us in Canada."

The call really moved me. It's been a long time since I've thought about collecting model horses as my passion rather than my business. You see, I was also around 11 years old when the first issue of "Just About Horses" came out. I saw the advertisement for it in the new Breyer I bought with my Christmas money. I begged my dad for my allowance (a whopping $2 back then) and put it into an envelope with my subscription form.

That little magazine opened up a world to me. I learned about photo showing and customizing. I made tack and sold it. I wrote a little newsletter. I made pen pal friends (before the days of the internet!) And before long, my stable had grown.

I stopped collecting when I was in high school. It wasn't "cool" to be so much in love with horses or play with toy horses, but I started taking riding lessons at age 16. In college I joined the equestrian team and rode for Molloy; I leased a school horse who became my best friend. I show groomed for my friends and I was soon riding in horse shows myself. My models collected dust and I sold a lot of them. Then, after I married, I packed them all away. We didn't have room to display them in our tiny apartment, so for 10 years they sat in storage.

Well now they're out. We moved into a nice house and I have room to display what I like. As I talked to the lady on the phone, my eyes strayed to the cabinet where my beloved models stand. After I hung up from the call, I decided to take the plunge.

I bought two new models.

I'd forgotten the excitement and happiness...the anticipation...the sheer pleasure of treating myself to a new model. Names. Breeds. Pedigrees. Show or keep for myself?

Today's pictures are my two new acquistion: KG's Gypsy Solitutde, and KG's Celtic Thunder, both Maggie Bennett micros painted by Kollean Gouyton of Stone Wolf Creations and purchased by me for my own personal collection.

Thank you, nice Canadian lady, for bringing back the joy.

Customer Painted Micro Minis

I spent most of today unwrapped lots of tiny pewter micro minis. When the box arrives from the casting company, each one is wrapped in....toilet paper. Yup, I'm not kidding. Jeff our pewter casting guy wraps each in a square of toilet paper. The stock area here looks like a Charmin factory exploded when we're done. After they're counted, we make sure each little guy stands okay. The legs often bend when the big box is shipped. By the way, if you get your micro and he doesn't stand right, gently...ever so gently, bend the legs. They do bend a bit no matter how carefully they're packed. For micros with a flat base, if they don't stand up okay, just take a rasp or heavy sandpaper and give it a few passes. When they come out of the mold they often have little metal tags or flakes on them, and because they're so small, even the little bits can make them off balance.

Celebrating Foals

Each month in 2010, we're going to celebrate something wonderful, something horse related, something model horse wonderful! This month: January, Celebrating Foals!

If you don't yet collect foals, there's a treat waiting for you. Foals make an adorable addition to your model horse stable. While it's true that you can only show them in halter (I've yet to see a foal under saddle LOL), the competition is much less for those who enjoy photo and live showing. Plus, because of their smaller size, they're often less expensive than big resins.

Photo Showing and Making Jumps for Model Horses

This week, I'm judging an online model horse photo show...the first show I've judged in about a year. I cannot get over how far the hobby has progressed since I entered my very first photo show in 1978. In the 1970's, if you had a 35 mm camera and could take closeups of the model horses, you were probably heading for the blue ribbon! I loved photo showing. My very first show was held by Alice Bulson. Does anyone remember Alice? Is she still around? I won a blue ribbon for my Breyer FAS in Western pleasure...and I bought a Josef Palomino lying down foal, Sultan's Golden Prince, off of Susan Peplinski for a whopping $5 in 1980, because I remembered how well he did showing. I'm joining TOPSA in 2010, and will be showing my own personal collection of Breyers, Stones, Josefs, Hagen Renakers and of course some selected EquinArt resins. I hope to see YOU in the show ring!!! Today's photo is my collection, circa 1980 or thereabouts...

Horse Themed Christmas Trees

My riding coach back on Long Island had a horse-themed Christmas tree. In fact, the two ladies that ran the riding stable where I worked BOTH had horse themed trees. Every ornament, from top to bottom, on their Christmas trees was a horse! Each Christmas we would give our coaches horse-y ornaments. One year, I made paper mache ornaments for them. I made Sculpey molds, then made paper mache and placed it over the molds. I painted them and added hair. They actually came out pretty good!

This year I made a few horse themed Christmas ornaments myself. I bought a package of plastic horses at the dollar store. I glued on ribbon for hooks, then decorated them with sparkled, little bits of holly and such. Their cute gifts for the holiday season.

Do you do a horse themed Christmas tree? Do you collect Breyer ornaments? My sister gave me a few, but in truth, I find them too big for my tree. I like the Father Christmas one, and I have one of a horse inside of a stirrup.

I have the four Western horse ornaments (we sell them in our online Christmas shop) as well as a pretty resin one that Candace Liddy gave me for Christmas. But my own tree is an eclectic mix of ornaments reflecting mostly nature (a lot of bird ornaments on my tree, along with snow flakes!) and ornaments passed on by my parents.

Aart, New Appaloosa Foal Resin

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I took Shadow out for a walk and visited with a neighbor for a bit. On our way back, we walked right into a huge flock of Bobwhites (tiny quail) in our driveway. They were so pretty. I have never seen them in person. For this city kid, it was quite a breathtaking site. They are about the size of pigeons (the city kid in me again!) but russet brown and white, with a distinctive white circle around the eye. They were nosing in the fallen leaves on the edge of the woods. There must have been dozens!

Today I'm sharing with you photos of Michelle Platt's newest resin, just added to our online store. Isn't he adorable? Meet Aart, Wyakin's little foal! He's LITTLE BITS scale to match her "wee Wyakin" release, the small scale Wyakin she did as a charity release. He is an edition size of 200 pieces and casting is by Resins by Randy, so do allow a few weeks for shipment, okay? But you can order him now...he's ready to go!

Michelle will have a scratching goal to match, and we will offer both foals for a little bit of a discount. If you want just Aart, go ahead and order. If you want them, both just tell me when you order Aart and I will extend the discount to you when I get his sister (!) listed. I don't have photos or info yet as little sis isn't at the casters yet but when I have it, I will post it.

This gorgeous painted Aart is called "Rum Raisin" and was created by Sherrylynne Shaver. I just love Sherrylynne's work....so, so detailed!

Mini Me

Someone also said that the new TWH micro mini looks like a "mini Indy". Now remember that the parked out pose for a Tennessee Walking Horse is common...we are IN NO WAY trying to copy another artist's work! Our tiny micro mini TWH, however, does look kind of like a nice little mini of our Stablemate TWH, which is cool...they were both sculpted by Maggie Bennett! The head is turned to the opposite sides, though. Check out the detail on the painted Stablemate by Katie Schmidt.

Rita Mae Brown, Queen of Animal Writers

I love Rita Mae Brown's books...it's one reason Virginia was on our destination list of places to consider when we wanted to move away from New York City! Ann M. Moore Recognized

Our own Ann M. Moore was selected to participate in this year’s Fall Open Juried Exhibition by the American Academy of Equine Art. Ann’s “Forehand Power Offense” was the only sculpted bas relief artwork admitted to the show which runs September 25, 2009 - November 8, 2009 in Lexington, Kentucky, at the Kentucky Horse Park. There were over 600 entries for the show, some from as far away as New Zealand, all competing for approximately 80 gallery spaces.

"Forehand Power Offense" is a framed series of three cast medallions depicting a polo pony at full gallop as its rider concentrates to execute a nearside forehand swing. It celebrates the grace, skill, and athleticism of both the pony and the player. Maggie's got some delightful new minis for you. Two drafters, a Kladruber stallion, American Saddlebred mare, and a mixed breed gelding in an awesome action pose should add fun to your collection without breaking the bank this fall. I hope to have them in stock on or around October 1, give or take - it depends on the caster. As with all unique EquinArt models, these are 100% made in the USA.

Micro Mini Wins German Live Show

I love it when customers let me know how their models did in the show ring. Andrea Bhend from Switzerland sent me this email. I copied it verbatim. Thanks Andrea!

She's referring to the micro mini Paso Fino ($15) sculpted by Maggie Bennett. She painted it herself. I'm attaching a picture of it for you to enjoy.

"I quickly wanted to write you to tell that yesterday, one of my little Micro MiniPaso I painted by myself won a gold medallion at the big German Breyerfest Show! He won the "mascot's class" and as you can see, his win is almost three times bigger than the horse itself, hahaha. The show, by the way, is the biggest in Europe and this year they had a record number of participants (61).
There were also so many people just visiting the fest like never before. It was fantastic, especially since right now, it's the only show I am able to visit since my studies take me so much time (and money). It was nice seeing people again I did not see for a couple of months..."

New Stuff for August

Well, I'm finally back! What I thought was going to be a few days off to enjoy a visit with my sister and her kids ended up being weeks away from the blog. First, I couldn't log into my blog here nor my others on Blogger - some sort of technical glitch. Then when that was resolved, the website had Issues. And I mean Issues. Yikes. The Help Desk at Yahoo was great, but uploading the site took a long, long time.

So I'm back...opening boxes of gorgeous new items here. First, Karla sent me the Arabian art tiles. Did you see them on the site? I think I told you that I have one in my office. I really love it. Someone else bought the same one and also raved about it. She's got two Arabian tiles, a Friesian and a pinto. See them here.

Next, Tabatha is almost ready with Elnathan version 2! She made changes to this guy and will be issuing only a handful. I'll get his waiting list posted soon. If you missed out on the first version, the second one, although different, will be available soon.

Sheri Rhodes sent me a painted Bravio resin that I'll be posting to auction soon. We're either going to do a private auction where you'll send us your bid or I'll do the typical eBay thing. He's a liver chestnut and the camera made him look too orange-y yesterday, so I'm debating taking new pictures of him. In the meantime though here's the closeup of his face - what do you think? I love how Sheri painted the star. So lifelike!

I just unpacked these gorgeous wall tiles from artist Karla Smith. While you may think, "Well, what do I need a wall tile for?" these aren't just for tiling the kitchen or bathroom! Each tile has a gorgeous print of Karla's artwork on it and a hook and little bumper "feet" on the back to hang it on the wall. It looks like a custom print but has rich, deep color. I loved this one, "Alert Arabians," so much that I immediately bought it and hung it on the office wall. Karla is sending me more - she's got a Friesian, and a whole bunch more. They will be $39.95 each plus shipping/handling.

New Art and Gifts Coming

Sharon Christensen is one of our customers' favorite artists. She hand painted vintage and antique items with Arabian horses. The above box was just added to our Ebay store, and I have several gorgeous vases left in stock.

The good news is that we will be adding MORE lovely gift items in July! Walt from Heavy Horse Farms just sent me pictures of his leather painting. It's stunning, and he does PORTRAITS of your horse too. And Ann M. Moore, whose resins Hale and Isbeau are great favorites, will be adding a line of sterling silver jewelry.

Models With Personality

I don't know about you, but I like horse models with some personality to them. Sure, when I was a kid, the Family Arabian Stallion and the Proud Arabian Stallion were my favorite Breyer horses, but that's because they were the best to play with my Barbie dolls and were in poses that could easily fit many of the elaborate plots my friends and I would come up with.

As a grown up, I appreciate the unusual poses a lot more. I think my favorite resins are all those that are doing something. Let It Fly by Tibbi Searcher, and the Mustang (shown here) she sculpted just for us. Jethro by Cathy Choyce. Alvaro and Unbridled Joy. Everyone's doing something different and unique.

Of course, that doesn't make it easy to show them. Alvaro's pose doesn't lend itself to English Pleasure classes, that's for sure.

But look at that French braided mane and the way Michelle captured it in clay...and I think you'll understand what I mean!

New Micro Minis

It's official - Maggie's got several new micro minis on the workbench in her studio. They are getting nearer and nearer to completion. Here are some photos of them! I don't have details yet on when they will go to the pewter casting company. As soon as I know, I will let you know through the blog, website and our email list.

Maggie and I are also kicking around a very special idea...unique, we think in the model horse world...for our micro mini collectors. A way for you to get exclusive, very limited edition micro minis at a good price with lots of variety. Stay tuned!

Also, thanks to our customers for their feedback on the micro mini book I wrote. It was my first foray into e-books, and I've learned a lot since creating it. I'm going to rework it over the summer and offer it for sale alongside my gardening and business books. Yes, I've written other e-books and I hope to have a lot to offer to the public. My other life outside of model horses is that of a writer and marketing consultant, and so I am going to be publishing many books that I hope will help folks.

The micro mini book is going to be divided into two smaller books and available at a FRACTION of the cost. Lulu wasn't the best choice for me as a publisher and I'm sorry the original price was so high. This way, you'll be able to buy the book for a very low price and enjoy the how-to stuff in one convenient spot.

New Resin by Maggie Bennett

We just announced a gorgeous new Andalusian resin by Maggie Bennett! Luminoso is an Andalusian stallion...and he's one of the best I've seen by Maggie. I love the open mouth and those rippling muscles. No base here - she's got him balanced nicely with the tail and two legs. Casting is done, and he's been cast by Mountain View Studios with wire reinforced legs, so you know the quality is good. I'm still waiting to hear if he's a limited edition or open edition. Get this guy soon - he looks like a winner for the show ring, for sure!

Tabatha Pack's Saoirse Wins at Equine Artists Challenge

Hot off the presses, with more details coming soon - Tabatha just emailed me to say that her sculpture, Saoirse, won first place at the Equine Artists Challenge in West Virginia. Saoirse won first, beating out even a three foot tall Arabian horse sculpture. Judges were impressed by her attention to correctness, both in breed characteristics and anatomy. More details coming soon.

A Horse of My Own

I'd always made a vow that by my 40th birthday, I'd own a 'real' horse. Well, next week's the big 4-0 and I still can't afford to build a barn or monthly board, so I've deferred my real horse dreams again.

Then to my surprise a box appeared today via UPS. We weren't expecting any shipments. I was in a meeting, so John took the box inside.

I discovered it was for me.

It was El Romantico, Sheri Rhodes' new horse...not to sell...but for me to keep!

A resin. For my own. For real. Not one that will pass through my doors only to be sold to someone else.

He's gorgeous. He's BIG! He's almost as big as my Proud Arabian Stallion. Bigger than the Family Arabian I think. I LOVE his face. He's got a great expression.

I just want to throw a saddle over his back and go for a ride.

Maybe I will...in my imagination.

Breeds People Collect: Spanish Breeds

Among our collectors, customers and friends, there are two 'all breed' collecting trends. The first is obvious: collecting only Arabians. But the second may not be so obvious. It's collecting Spanish breeds.

From the Andalusian to the Paso Fino, many people are just crazy about Spanish breed horses. I won a contest many years ago and received a free subscription to Conquistador magazine, the best publication for Spanish horse breed enthusiasts. I was dazzled by all the flowing manes and tails and Roman noses! The superb dressage maneuvers and fiery personalities promised on all the glossy pages were enticing...but somewhat intimidating.

Let's face it: at this point in my life, as the wheel of time slips me past 40, my days riding hot horses are probably over. When I was in college, I rode off the track Thoroughbreds and grass-green Quarter Horses. Today, I'm happier on a packer, the good old babysitter horse.

But that's the beauty of model horses. With models, we can collect our fantasy horses. We CAN own fiery Arabian stallions or Paso Fino or a soaring young Lipizzan. The possiblities are endless.

I thought you might like a little insider information. Think of this sort of as a reward for visiting our blog!

We have SO many lovely Arabians on our website...and so many talented artists. But here's a look into the top best-selling Arabians from EquinArt Creations. Do you own any of them? If not, check out their web pages. Some are still available from us as unpainted (or painted) resins, while others can be found on the second hand market through MHSP, eBay, etc.

Amirah by Cathy Bercier-Choyce: This Traditional size Arabian mare is still a favorite among collectors. They love her correct conformation and her breed characteristics. We hear only two complains on her: the mane interferes with Western saddle horns on tack (you can easily take out the bit that hits the horn), and the base is attached. Some artists have removed her from the base, but frankly I think this takes away some of the motion from the piece. Let me know what you think. She remains one of our top sellers.
Elnathan by Tabatha Pack: Yes, he's new to the herd on EquinArt, but I've rarely seen a model like this....he just oozes life and there is something so stunning about this piece that the photos don't do it justice. He's sold out with a waiting list.
Aten by Candace Liddy: This little rearing Stablemate Arabian stallion was another runaway best seller. We sold out on the resin edition, but bronzes are available. He's tiny but mighty, a fighting stallion with flowing mane and tail. Candace, sculpt more Stablemates please! Aten Khamen is the Traditional size version of this guy, and Aten Khamen is available - unpainted and one mahagony bay.
Aiyana Salome by Tabatha Pack: Graceful, soft, pleasing to the eye, this Classic size Arabian mare is just perfect. Plus Tab generously donates a portion of sales to charity. Can't beat it!
Micro mini Arabian stallion by Maggie Bennett: Tiny and mighty, he looks like a mini Proud Arabian Stallion but with better body type. A favorite with micro mini collectors, the molds got messed up so we were out of stock on him for a long time, but he's in stock now and ready to ship out. Cast in solid pewter, he looks so lifelike you'd swear you heard a neigh.

Those are the favorites among EquinArt resins. I know there are tons of gorgeous Arabian resins out there by individual artists and other companies. No matter how you look at it, Arabian horses remain the most popular breed collected, and will probably remain popular. They're so beautiful, they epitomize the grace of the horse.

Are People Buying Model Horses

So many people are talking about the economy. Are we in a downturn, or have reached bottom yet? I'm not sure. Personally, I think the high-flying days of the last five years are gone the way of the flapper of the 1920's. Many people spent above their means, companies and individuals speculated on air, and the result crashed. Now we have to sober up and face reality.

But that doesn't describe model horse people very well. Most model horse collectors I've met over the years are hard working, middle class people. In fact, many love real horses but can't afford to own one - I was in that camp for many, many years. So they collect beautiful model horses to satisfy their yearning for all things equine.

For these folks, the biggest worry now may be whether or not their job will be there next week or month.

Have people stopped buying model horses? A recent poll over on Model Horse Blab showed mixed results. Lots of people said yes, they've slowed down their purchases, or they're more choosy with what they buy. Others said they are not buying anything but are putting extra cash towards paying off credit cards (a very, very smart move). Still others buy what they like and don't worry about a thing.

For our artists - including the painting and prepping artists who buy our resins and who work with our customers - I would say simply that if you continue to create lovely art and provide good service, you'll still get business. It may take longer in this economy, but no matter how the markets roll, beautiful, original, and realistic model horses will still sell.

Just back from Las Vegas Live. I wanted to let you know that the Shaver painted Festus won Reserve Grand Champion on the long ears class, Wyakin won first in the Appaloosa class, the Jaime Baker Aidan, and the Jeannine DuCuir Aidan took a first and a second, and Unbridled Joy came in fourth place. Competition was very steep with some beautiful models painted by top artists:0) Not too shabby!

I may go to one more show before Nan with the new Cindy WIlliams Festus as well as some others that will be coming in soon, and the beautiful Emboldened by Dani that inadvertently got left at home:0(

My Breyer models were on display at the public library too - I'm standing in front of the display case. I'm in the 7th grade here. Tennessee Walking Horses

This picture is the Tennessee Walking Horse mare, in Breyer Stablemate scale, sculpted by Maggie Bennett and painted her by Kollean Gouyton. This is probably my favorite from among the Stablemate scale Tennessee Walking Horses. John and I first saw Tennessee Walkers live and in person in Shelbyville. We were on vacation, and he found out that the national championship show was going on, so we swung by to watch the horses warm up. I was so struck by the beauty and pleasant gaits of these horses! I love Walkers, and hope someday to own one.

Lots of quick updates from our artists! Michelle Platt sent me this photo of her Unbridled Joy resin, this one painted by Dani Schacht. I can't get over the realism. This is one of the things that attracted me to the hobby back in the 1970's - you can practically hear the crowd road behind this guy as he leaps into the airs above the ground!

Candace Liddy dropped me a quick note to let me know that her latest project for us is underway...more kitty sculptures! She got so much positive feedback on Minx & OJ, and customers loved them so much that she decided to sculpt more kitties for EquinArt. Yay!

Tabatha posted that Elnathan is heading towards the finish line, and he'll start shipping out as soon as she gets word from the caster that he's done. He's shipping in a first ordered, first ship manner...and anyone who's paid in full will get on the list of the first to ship! Please be patient though as we've got a lot to ship out.

Luis Aquilar from Mexico sent me two of his bull sculptures, one painted solid black and the other red. These are the bulls in large Traditional size that have interchangeable horns. They are very light and well made. I have both in stock right now.

Sheri Rhodes also has something new available, although this isn't a horse - it's a tool for equine sculptors that one of her employees created. It's a gizmo that you hold up to the horse's head to check the proportions. At just about $10, it's worth it if you sculpt.

As for myself, I spent quality time with my buddy Dozer the Belgian draft horse this past weekend. I've also found a Belgian breeder nearby; who knows, would you like to see more draft horse resins? Let me know!

Aiyana Salome Triumphs on Two Continents!

Two emails came to Tabatha Pack on the same day from happy owners of Aiyana Salome , her classic scale Arabian resin sculpture. I'm reprinting the emails here word for word. The photo is the Aiyana Salome painted by Penn Youngman, now in Sweden with her happy owner Marie Baath.

Hi Tabatha!

I just wanted you to know that my Aiyana Salome painted by Penn Youngman became Arabian champion on her first live show here in Sweden! Actually, it was my first live show too. so she also became best horse owned by a novice! It´s such a beautiful little mare. I had my eyes on Elnathan too, but I guess I was too late... Congrats on that beautiful horse!

Bravio Nearly Ready

Just heard from Sheri Rhodes that Bravio's waste mold is completed and has been sent back to Cat for touch ups. For Cathy's sculptures, we actually have to make two molds to get it perfect. The first mold, the waste mold, is cast and captures the original clay work that Cathy sculpted. The problem though is that during shipping there's always a ding or two in the clay, no matter how carefully Cat packs the work. So we have a mold created and one resin cast made and shipped back to Cathy. She then touches up the resin cast - sanding, sculpting, whatever she needs to do to get it just right. Cat's a perfectionist and she'll work on these sculptures until in her opinion they are just right, and believe me with her experience - working for the USET, owning and showing horses her whole life, fox hunter and just an all around expert on horses - I trust her judgment completely. Bravio's waste cast, as it is called, is then shipped back to Sheri at Mountain View Studios for the final production mold. At that point, we order copies for the customers who ordered early. It's a long process, but we are always trying to get it just right, and make sure that EquinArt's works remain the best available to model horse and horse art collectors worldwide.

Time With Horses and New Resins Painted by Kollean

What a wonderful weekend for us out here in the country. My neighbor, Patty, took me to visit her friends Donna and Donna's sister, Judy. Judy owns four horses and I had a wonderful time petting fuzzy noses and running my hands through thick furry winter coats as I helped Judy unblanket and blanket her trail horse, Tar, so we could give him a bit of a brushing. It was a beautiful clear winter's day and I came home with my spirit refreshed and replenished by spending time with horses and good friends.

Kollean Gouyton, one of our favorite painting artists, just finished three new horses for us. I have two posted to our website but the third is just on MHSP right now. She painted Maggie Bennett's micro mini mare and foal set into a nice chestnut pinto. The shading is beautiful and they're matched but not 'matchy-matchy' as they would say in the fashion world! There's also the jumping mule painted Appaloosa, and my favorite - Tibbi Searcher's Stablemate sized bucking Mustang, painted into the best bay pinto I've ever seen. I just love this one. John was working with his dad in the workshop they're building and when I opened the box from Kollean I ran out to the workshop to show it to him. I don't usually get this excited when new resins come in but this one just HAD to be shown off right away! They're all here, in the stockroom waiting for homes. Just gorgeous! I'll put his picture here on the blog for you to enjoy. Kollean named him KG's Sky Rocket and that's the name he'll go with unless someone who buys him wants to change it.

Realism

Nothing makes me happier than when customers tell me, "That horse model looks JUST like my mare/stallion/gelding!" We hear it all the time, but it never ceases to thrill me. It means that our artists have managed to capture the living, breathing image of the horse in sculpture.

Here are some of our models that people note looks like "their" horse:

Wyakin - several people bought her because she reminded them of their own favorite Appaloosa mare.
Festus - a mule breeder in Florida called me to tell me how much he looked like her own two year old!
Miz Charisma - a Lakeshore Collection original porcelain horse. An eBay purchases wrote me a long letter after receiving his Lakeshore bay horse to say how much he loved it, how Miz Charisma reminded him of his very own beloved mare.

Of all the horses we've produced, With A Twist conjured up my very favorite mount - the real 'Twist' after whom I named the model. The real Twist was an off the track Thoroughbred that was a dream to ride. Intelligent, gentle, sweet and athletic, Twist went on to become a nice hunter and eventually made her way from New York to Maryland. Last I heard, she was owned by a young girl and she was packing her around the shows.

What Do You Do With Model Horses?

Sometimes people unfamiliar with the hobby ask me, "What do you DO with model horses?" They understand collecting, and may themselves collect something - decorative plates, Hummel figures, rare coins, something like that. But toy horses? What do you DO with them?

Show them - you can show model horses. People take pictures of their horses, create elaborate scenes, make miniature tack and rider dolls, and send the pictures off to be judged by 'real' horse show rules. This is called Photo Showing. Collectors also bring their horse models and accessories to "Live Shows" where they meet other collectors and also judge one anothers' horses and accessories by how realistic and accurate they are. It can be a lot of fun!
Painting - some people with a flair for art enjoy customizing and painting their models. Our unpainted Artist Resins are ideally suited for this since they're a blank canvas.
Tack making - people make miniature tack for their models.
Research - many 4H clubs, Girl Scouts groups and adult groups enjoy the research part of the hobby. Finding breed information, learning about various horse breeds, and assigning pedigrees is addicting!

As you can see, there's plenty to do - in addition to collecting!

Elnathan Sold Out!

Elnathan by Tabatha Pack is sold out! Tabatha accepted preorders, and then we opened up orders on Saturday. By Sunday night, all reservation slots were full, plus I have a waiting list of folks who contacted me before I had to cut off the orders. I'm thrilled for Tabatha. We helped launch her model horse career. One of the most rewarding parts of my job as president of EquinArt is helping new artists launch their careers. So far, we have launched Cathy Choyce, Michelle Platt, and Tabatha Pack. Each has had a sold out resin so far. Congrats to Tabatha. What a wonderful Arabian stallion resin. Welcome to the EquinArt Creations company! I started collecting model horses in 1974, when my sister gave me a palomino Breyer Family Arabian stallion. Flash forward thirty years, and I'm at New York University getting ready to finish my Master of Science degree in Direct and Interactive Marketing. I needed a project, something that could be sold through direct marketing. What to pick? Model horses of course! And so I wrote the business plan, and rediscovered how much I LOVE model horses! Today, I run EquinArt Creations with my husband, John. We live on a 17 acre farm in rural Virginia and run EquinArt as well as my consulting business, Seven Oaks, and the farm.

We are now in our 5th year of business. I'm proud to say that EquinArt Creations won the Startup Nation 2008 Honorable Mention for Most Innovative Home Business. What a leap forward from my little tack making business in 1980 to winning a national contest!
